Hawaii is like no other place on Earth. Its lush greenery, crystal clear blue waters, and warm tropical climate infects many first-time visitors with something called Island Fever. It’s the sudden urge to quit your job back on the mainland and sell off all your winter clothes (and house) and move back to Hawaii as soon as possible. Most visitors weather their bouts of Island return and Fever to their lives on the mainland (a little sadder) and don’t come back to stay for good. But a few do. For those lucky enough to return to the land of palm trees and of wooden rings made from koa, they’ll be required a good watch. Here are a few ideas on choosing the perfect watch for the Hawaii lifestyle. It Must Be Waterproof
Hawaii is really a chain of islands in the middle of water. The Hawaii lifestyle is built round the water and water-related activities like swimming, boating, fishing and surfing and diving. For any watch your are thinking about for Hawaii, you must contemplate: what will it do when I get it wet? Because it can get wet. There are a multitude of good waterproof watches available today, but it really wasn’t always so. That brings us to the company that invented the modern waterproof watch as you may know it.
Rolex: Nothing Beats an Oyster
Rolex has owned the high-quality, waterproof watch market ever since Mercedes Gleitze swam the English Channel with one back in 1926. Patek Philippes are beautiful watches, but for the Hawaii lifestyle, we would recommend an Oyster-cased Rolex every time. But what one? There’s countless to choose from all the way from the dressy Datejust to the burly Deepsea. Here’s the good part-they’re all great. Any modern Rolex Oyster is waterproof to at least 100 meters. That means it is more than adequate for any reasonable use you could potentially put it to in the water. True dive watches like the Submariner and Sea-Dwelller and the new Deepsea might be better for avid divers. For for most other people, they’re very neat but can be overkill.
Given the casual dress code of the islands, where an Aloha shirt is considered proper business attire, a strong case could be created for the Rolex Submariner being the best all-around Hawaii watch. There isn’t much worry about fitting a thick sports watch under a shirt cuff with your tuxedo in Hawaii. Is Rolex the only option for a high-quality watch that’s great for the Hawaii lifestyle? Certainly not. It just happens to be the watch that put the waterproof watch on the map. It seems sensible they would make a very good one. Everybody must pick the perfect Hawaii lifestyle watch for themselves, and not for somebody else,. That’s the bottom line. For many people, this may mean no watch at all. That does are most often a popular option exercised by many who survive “island time.” Aloha, and good luck choosing your own perfect Hawaii lifestyle watch. Mahalo for reading.Reblog
